Thanks?

So, I'm going to give this another shot. Alot has happened since my last entry, so I should have plenty to write about. Since the last time I wrote here, I joined the Coast Guard, went through Boot Camp in Cape May, New Jersey, drove across the country, went to SK "A" school in Petaluma, California, where I learned how to be a Logistics Warrior, drove across the country again, and now, 6 months after I left for basic training, I find myself exactly where I was before got on that bus to Cape May. Not only am I back in Bowie, but my life is pretty much exactly the way it was before I left. I'm doing the same things, hanging out with the same people, and finding myself in the same awkward situations. The supporting cast has changed a little, but basically, its the same fucking movie. I'm even working in a resturant again. The only difference is now I have a new part time job, drilling once a month with the Coast Guard Mobile Support Unit in Baltimore. It's Thanksgiving, and I guess I have enough to be thankful for, so I can't really complain. It's just that for 2 months in Cape May this summer, I went through the most challenging experience of my life. I remember thinking that I was never going to be the same after I left there, but now, less than half a year later, it kind of feels like it never even happened. I was at Cape May for eight weeks and now the time I spent there kind of just seems like some crazy, fucked up dream I had. I have alot of crazy stories from boot camp, and I think im going to start writing them down here while I can still remember most of them. So maybe that will be coming in the next week or so. Stay tuned.

Parking Ticket

Today was pretty uneventful. I went to work, then I came home, and I wanted to do something productive with the day, so I called some people, but everyone I know whos still in the area goes to UMD, and everyone who goes to UMD was apparently busy doing college stuff. So that was lame. But I ended up hanging out with Jen, who I havent seen in a while, so that was less lame. Except we went to Noodles and Company, and we parked, but we had no change, so I went inside, paid, and ran back out to put money in the meter, but they already wrote me a ticket for $17.50. So that was double lame. But then on the way home, I was driving, and I was about to turn on my street, and then Konstantine came up on my mp3 player, which was on shuffle, so I ended up just driving around aimlessly for the next 9 minutes and 35 seconds, because I love that song. And now I'm home.

the end.

Mixtape

In chronological order, these fifteen songs have all meant something to me at some point in the last year.
Whenever I hear these songs, I will always remember something about 2005.
Whether its makeupstains or driving around at 2 am with the volume up,
the windows down, and “Holiday From Real” on repeat, I will never
forget these songs.
This is my mixtape for 2005:

1. Harrow Had Eyes- Charun

“So dark in here”

At the beginning of the year, Rob, Jake, and Nick, and I spent
countless hours in Nick’s basement, my bedroom, the Recording
Technology Booth at Roosevelt, and even my bathroom. The end
result was an amazing 3-song demo. The end of "Charun" features
background screaming by none other then Mike “The Man” Reilly.
Recording and mixing those songs was one of my favorite experiences in
2005, and I am incredibly proud of the way that demo turned out.

2. Bright Eyes- Land Locked Blues

“There’s kids playing guns in the street
And ones pointing his tree branch at me
So I put my hands up I say “enough is enough,
If you walk away, I’ll walk away”
And he shot me dead”

I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning was my favorite of the two Bright Eyes cds
released in January, and "Land-Locked Blues" is my favorite song on
that cd.

3. Wakefield- Reasons

“Now the year is almost over,
Nothing left to keep me sober
Suck it up, where am I going now?
Teacher's done with all their failing
In too deep and now I'm bailing
But the water's way above my head”

Ever since I was a freshman, 2005 meant one thing: Graduation.
The first 3 years seemed to drag on forever, but after January, everything happened so fast.
After spring break, we had exams, then prom, then Graduation.
And then it was just over.

4. Saves The Day- Jessie and My Whetstone

“To me, the only thing left after a while was that night
We watched documentaries up through morning, then you kicked me out.
You opened up your screen door and threw me off the porch.
It was summer then and I drove home whistling down the pike.
And that was that: our one sweet night together.”

I will always remember nightwatch.

5. Fall Out Boy- Of All The Gin Joints In All The World

“We’re making out inside crashed cars,
Sleeping through all our memories,
I used to waste my time dreaming of being alive,
now I only waste it dreaming of you.”

This song basically sums up the entire month of June, and it means more to me than any other song on this list.

6. John Ralston- Keep Me

“I don’t want to wear all your armor,
I just want to be in your chest”

John Ralston opened for The Get Up Kids Farewell tour. I had
never heard of him before that night, but his set definitely made me a
little less sad about The Get Up Kids breaking up.

7. West Side Story- Jet Song

“When you’re a Jet,
You’re a Jet all the way,
From your first cigarette,
To your last dying day”

This summer, I discovered Vodka, and as a result, sometimes I
would entertain my fellow lifeguards with a drunken rendition of the
Jet Song, complete with snapping and dancing on the tables in the snack
bar. I like alcohol a lot.

8. Jack’s Mannequin- Holiday From Real

“Oh, it's a picture of perfection
And the postcards gonna read:
’Fuck yeah we can live like this’
We can live like this
But if you left it up to me
Everyday would be a holiday from real
We'd waste our weeks beneath the sun
We'd lie and tell our friends
’It's so much fun out here’
But when it's all over
I'll come back for another year”

I must have listened to this song a thousand times this summer, and I
never get tired of hearing it. I love Everything In Transit, and
I love Jack’s Mannequin.

9. The Format- The First Single

“I could stand to do without, all the people I have left behind
What's the point in going around when it's a straight line baby, a straight line down
So let's make a list of who we need,
And it’s not much of anything
Let's make a list of who we need
And we'll throw it away,
Cause we don't need anyone,
No, we don't need anyone”

I was a little late discovering The Format. Interventions and
Lullabies came out in 2003, but I hadn’t even heard of them until this
year. I bought the cd in June, and I’ve been listening to them
constantly ever since.

10. Weezer- Pink Triangle

"I’m dumb, she’s a lesbian"

Sadly, this song could be applied to more than one situation in 2005. I’m not even going to elaborate on that.

11. Fall Out Boy- Tell That Mick He Just Made My List Of Things To Do Today

"On the drive home, joke about the kid you used to see, and his jealousy.
Breaking hearts has never looked so cool as when you wrap your car around a tree,
Your makeup looks so great next to his teeth”

Before September, I had never listened to an angry emo breakup song
like this and been able to completely relate to it, and I really hope
that it never happens again.

12. Say Anything- Admit It!

"I’m proud of my life and the things that I have done
Proud of myself and the loner I’ve become
You’re free to whine, it will not get you far
I do just fine, my car and my guitar"

I just like this song a lot.
And I like Say Anything a lot.
"Admit It!" a great song, and if you haven’t already heard it, you should go listen to it right now.
I don’t really have anything else to say about this song.

13. Relient K- College Kids

“Oh no, not for me, not for me
Call it torture, call it university
No, arts and crafts is all i need
I'll take caligraphy and then i'll make a fake degree”

Yeah…
I fucking dropped out of community college.
I officially suck at life.

14. Death Cab For Cutie- Brothers On A Hotel Bed

"You may tire of me,
As our December sun is setting,
Cause I'm not who I used to be.
No longer easy on the eyes,
These wrinkles masterfully disguise
The youthful boy below
Who turned your way and saw
Something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and end"

Probably the hardest part of this past fall was putting this summer behind me.
I spent so much of this fall dwelling on things that happened over the
summer, and not enough time dealing with what was going on in the
present.
What happened this summer was kind of a big deal, but I shouldn’t have
let it completely take over my life for the rest of the year.
This is my biggest regret of 2005.

15. Counting Crows- A Long December

“It's been a long December,
And there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last”

Two thousand and five had its ups and downs, but the last week was definitely one the best weeks of the year.
It definitely gave me a reason to look forward to 2006.
